John, thanks for that information. I am not familiar with homesteading in the Rio Puerco valley, but I will start digging into it. If you find anything about Rio Puerco in your research, I would love to learn from you! Also, thanks for the information about the three eras of colonization. I will fold that in.
To the anonymous poster, I believe Cabazon was deserted due to changes in water access. At one point, the Rio Puerco was dammed up, which created more standing water for grazing. When that dam burst, the BLM did not allow it to be rebuilt (due to concerns about overgrazing). The resulting decrease in herd size supported smaller human populations. Like rural regions nationwide, younger populations began migrating to jobs in cities.
